It is much easier than you might think to make your own lotions at home. Contrary to popular belief, many recipes don't even require many or, in some cases, any special ingredients. For some recipes you'll find most everything you need right in your pantry, allowing you to quickly whip up a lotion that will make your skin feel softer and smoother affordably and naturally.
In order to make lotion, all recipes rely upon a combination of oil and water bound together through the use of an emulsifier. You can easily whip up a supply of customized body lotion for about a dollar. In making your own lotion, you have the added benefit of creating a special, unique moisturizer that is tailored to your skin concerns and scent preferences.
Homemade Lotion Recipe
Ingredients You Will Need:
½ cup oil
2 tablespoons beeswax
Distilled water, as needed
Pour oil and beeswax into a microwave proof container. Place the mixture into the microwave and heat on medium, checking every 30 seconds to see if the ingredients have melted. Add distilled water to the mixture, pouring it in slowly and stirring briskly with a whisk until everything is mixed well.
For a fluffier cream, try using an immersion blender. Be sure to use the lowest speed setting and fully submerge the blender before turning it on to avoid splashing hot wax all over. Allow the lotion to cool down. It will thicken as it cools. Spoon it into a clean container. An old lotion bottle can work great as a dispenser as it already has a built in pump.
When selecting your oil, some considerations should be made with regard to skin type. People with extremely sensitive skin should consider grapeseed oil as it absorbs quickly, and does not cause allergic reactions. Almond oil is another great choice thanks to its nice light nutty scent and its wonderful ability to soften the skin. Coconut oil is best for people with very dry skin, as it is high in fat and quite oily.
Consider adding a few drops of essential oils to the mix to incorporate your favorite scent. This is a nice way to further personalize your homemade creation, making it your own signature product. Once you master making lotion, you can look into branching out with other products such as making your own natural soaps.
Olive oil is a fantastic moisturizer for your nails, skin and hair. Including a little olive oil in you diet is an effective way to help strengthen these three things from the inside. However, you can also use the oil to strengthen them on the outside.
