What to Look For When Choosing a Spa

By: Amber Hilton

Nothing is more relaxing than a day at the spa. The combination of calming music, invigorating scents of aromatherapy and a soothing touch melts your cares away, leaving you relaxed and refreshed. However, not every spa is created equal. Because of this, you might want to consider several factors before choosing a spa for your next day of pampering.

For starters, you should think about the types of services you are interested in having performed. Do you want a relaxing 90-minute hot stone massage, a pampering mani/pedi combo or an anti-aging facial? How about all three? Many spas offer similar services, but every spa has its own twist on your favorites, so it's a good idea to check out online service menus or stop by and pick up a menu before booking your appointment.

Medical spas -- medi spas for short -- are an option if you're more interested in cosmetic treatments like Botox injections or chemical peels than in rest and relaxation. However, many medi spas offer both cosmetic treatments and more typical day-spa treatments like massages and facials.

Another thing to consider when choosing a spa is convenience. Nothing ruins the tranquil feeling you have when you leave the spa like having to sit in rush-hour traffic for hours. It's a good idea to schedule your appointment at a time when you're not in a hurry and to select a spa that's close to your home or workplace. If you really want a special day of pampering, you might ask your doting hubby to drop you off to avoid the hassle of traffic altogether.

Choosing a spa that's convenient to your home or workplace also allows you to stop by and check out the facilities before booking a full spa day. Many spas even offer complimentary or reduced-price mini treatments to walk-in guests so that they can sample the services. This is a great way to get a feel for the whole atmosphere of the spa and the quality of its service providers without investing in a full-length treatment or an entire spa day. Unless you've received a glowing recommendation from a reliable friend, it's best not to schedule spa services until you've had a chance to check out the facilities and service menu for yourself.
