Proper Business Attire Rules

By: Lisa Bower

The rules of proper business attire are good pieces of information to have before you dive into the working world. You want to present yourself in a professional and polished manner. The clothes you would wear out to the bar are different than the clothes you would wear to the office. This distinction isn't just important-it could make or break your career.

Men
For men, it is important to stock your closet with crisp clothing that makes you look sharp and professional. If you work in an office, wear a dark suit or pressed trousers and button-down shirts. The most professional shirts to wear are solid white or blue shirts. Try to stay away from patterned or brightly colored clothing: You want your supervisors' focus to be on your professionalism and not on your clothing.

Ties can make or break an outfit. Business fashion etiquette says that ties should be silk or silk-like and classic in style. Keep the joke cartoon ties at home. A tie should be a subtle addition that complements your outfit.

Women
For women, it's best to wear polished clothing that is not too flashy or trendy. Business wear should be something that highlights a woman's professionalism. Fitted blazers, pressed trousers or skirts made out of high-quality materials and pressed button-down shirts are all timeless additions to a woman's business wardrobe. If you wear a skirt, be sure that it is knee-length, as anything shorter may be deemed inappropriate for the office. If you wear a button-down shirt, be sure that you do not reveal too much cleavage. You want the focus of your office to be on your performance, not on your body.

Keep your accessories to a minimum. You want to look polished, so you don't want to load up your arms and neck with loads of necklaces and bracelets. Instead, a simple strand of pearls or subtle necklace should do the job. Wedding rings, school rings and tasteful watches are also acceptable.
