How to Tie a Sarong

By: Rachel Mork

Knowing how to tie a sarong opens countless style doors. Learn how to make a sarong work best for you through the following approaches.

Classic Sarong Dress
Open the rectangular sheath of cloth so that the long ends are in your two hands. Wrap the sarong around your back and bring the long ends together in front of your chest. Twist the top two corners of the long ends, crisscrossing the ends so that you have adequately covered your front side while creating two long handles of cloth by twisting the free material. Tie the handles of cloth behind your neck securely. The result should be a full coverage dress with a halter-top-like top.

Crisscross Sarong Dress
Open the rectangular sheath of cloth such that the long ends are in your two hands. Wrap the sarong around your back and bring the long ends together in front of your chest.  Crisscross the two upper ends such that the material wraps itself across your chest, then tie the upper corners behind your neck. The result is a wrap crisscross sarong dress.

Two Tier Sarong Dress
Open the rectangular sheath of cloth such that the cloth is vertical to your body, holding two short ends in your hands by your neck. Wrap the sarong around your body, meeting the two short ends under your arm pit. Cross the two short ends once, then tie them under your arm pit. Reaching halfway down your body length, take two segments of the cloth around your midsection, and tie them at waist level, just under the arm pit knot. This should create a two-tiered sarong dress that will remain secure and provide adequate coverage.

Sarong Skirt
Put on a bikini bathing suit. Open the rectangular sheath of cloth such that the long ends are in your two hands. Wrap the sarong around your back and bring the long ends together in front of your waist. Tuck one corner of the sarong into the top of your bikini bottom. Take the two loose ends and wrap around your waist until you have a comfortable fit. Crisscross the loose ends, twist, and tie into a secure knot.
