How to Tie a Winter Scarf

By: Aysha Schurman

Learn how to tie a winter scarf with these stylish options. Winter scarves make a style statement as key accessories in your winter wardrobe. By using creative tying techniques, you can make your scarf look like a fashionable part of your outfit, rather than something you threw on at the last minute. Most scarf ties can also work for a shawl or pashmina.

Loop tie
The loop look is a very metropolitan style for scarves. Start by folding the scarf in half. Drape the scarf around your neck and pull the ends through the folded loop. Place the scarf ends in front of your shoulder or behind your shoulder.

Twisted loop tie
The twisted loop tie is a slightly fancier metropolitan look than a regular loop. Start by folding the scarf in half. Grab the ends of the scarf in one hand and the loop in the other hand. Twist the scarf around a few times. Drape the still twisted scarf around your neck and pull the ends through the folded loop. Place the scarf ends in front of your shoulder or behind your shoulder.

Loose loop tie
The loose loop tie is perfect for people who don't like scarves lying too close to their necks. Start by draping the scarf around the back of your neck and over your shoulders to the front. Loosely cross the ends of the scarf over your shoulders to the back. Make another loose cross and pull the ends over your shoulders to the front. Tie the ends of the scarf together in a loose knot and let the ends hang down.

Single cross tie
The most common form of winter scarf tie is the single cross. Drape the scarf around your neck. Tie it once loosely around the neck and let the ends fall where they may. You can also push one scarf end over your shoulder to help the tie stay tied.

Double ascot tie
If you need a sharp and neat looking way to tie your winter scarf, try a double ascot to keep you warm and stylish. Start by draping your scarf around the back of your neck and over your shoulders. Cross the scarf ends and bring them to the back. Cross the scarf ends again and bring them around the front. Tie the ends in a single knot so that they line up evenly, one end falling over the other like a necktie.
