How to Wear Scarves

By: Aysha Schurman

There's been some surprising current news traveling around the fashion world. Rumor has it that you no longer have to be European to look stylish by adding a scarf to your outfit. Everyone is now free to accessorize as they please.

While this headline might be overblown, it's a true statement that scarves are seen much more in Europe than in the United States. This is a pity because scarves can be an easy and fun way to spice up any style. It's even possible to wear them without ending up looking like a wild gypsy.

If you want to know how to wear scarves, the primary rule is to use it in natural matches only. Remember that fine silk usually doesn't go with chunky wool scarves. Shy cotton plaids never mix well with sultry satin florals. Scarves should blend in with a garment-s overall feel, never against it.

Regardless of the exact style or accessory needed, scarves are wonderful because they can be worn on the head, neck, shoulders, waist or hips. Keep a selection of pashmina, silk, cashmere, velvet, wool and cotton scarves to match any of these wardrobe needs.

Adding a long, thick silk scarf to the lapels of your suit adds a bright variety and highlights the garment's tailoring. Scarves are to women's suits what ties are to men's suits; a quick, cheap and effective way to make one garment fit many different styles. You can also drape a wool, square scarf like a shawl over one shoulder of a business suit.

However, draping a flowing, flimsy scarf over the shoulders of a highly tailored blouse will make your look seem messy. The more tailored the style, the shorter and more formal the scarf should be. Remove the flimsy scarf, and add a slim, short silk scarf tied around the neck to match the tailored blouse.Wrapping a beautiful scarf around the waist of a dull dress or skirt is an easy way to update any look. Looping a long scarf around your neck while wearing a pair of jeans and a tank top will add flair to your appearance.

Never let trends influence your personal style. Your style should be a combination of fashions you feel drawn to and fashions that look good on you. Don't be bound by labels, and use whatever color combinations you love the most.

Most people understand these basics, such as matching your belt and shoes. But there are finer points to properly accessorizing. You need to know what to add to your outfit or you'll end up with fashion accessory overkill.
