How to Avoid Blisters

By: Nichole Smith

Blisters are uncomfortable, painful and downright irritating. For people who spend a lot of time on their feet, though, sometimes blisters will be inevitable. In order to keep from suffering the pain of a blister, you need to protect your feet before blisters even have a chance to form. The friction, heat and moisture from your feet are likely causing more than odor.

Taking care of your feet needs to be a priority no matter what you're doing. Your feet won?t take you very far if you don't properly protect them from the damage of walking, hiking or being on your feet all day. When it comes to your socks, comfort matters, but don't let your socks become too worn down. You can also protect your feet by wearing more than one pair of socks at a time. While you might think that cotton socks are best, beware; they tend to hold moisture more than other blends.

If you aren?t wearing the right shoes, your feet can constantly be uncomfortable. When buying new shoes, find a shoe that fits well and allows your feet to breathe. Shoes in disrepair will cause discomfort, even if you do find other ways to protect them.

Ideally, you want to keep your feet dry, and talcum powder or a foot powder could be the answer. Even cornstarch will help your feet if you have nothing else available. Though it sounds like the opposite of keeping your feet dry to avoid blisters, you can lubricate the feet to protect them. Both powders and lubricants will help to diminish the friction and dampness that results from sweaty feet.

If you discover that a blister is beginning to form, you can keep it from getting worse by wrapping your feet with various wraps or bandages. Either of these offers the added security similar to wearing multiple socks.

Your feet keep you moving, and you owe it to them to care for them. While you may not be able to avoid ever getting blisters, you can prevent many of them with a few tricks.
