Ideas and Suggestions for Clothing Donations

By: Conny Manero

When the time for spring cleaning comes around every year, families go through their wardrobes and discard items they've outgrown or are no longer in fashion. Whether it's a man's suit, a woman's coat, or a child's pajamas, some of those items may still be in good condition and rather than throwing clothing away, they could be donated. If you need ideas and suggestions for clothing donations, there are quite a few to consider.

Donate to Goodwill

Founded in 1935, Goodwill is a global organization whose mission it is to enrich the quality of life for those less fortunate. Among other things, Goodwill accepts clothing, shoes and blankets. Items should be clean and in good condition. It doesn't matter to Goodwill that clothing and shoes are old and no longer fashionable, but they should be free of holes and other damage. Anyone can visit a Goodwill store and select what they need for a fraction of the original price.

Donate to The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has been around since 1865. Originally founded by William Booth and his wife Catherine to help the suffering people in London, the Salvation Army has grown into a worldwide organization. Donations can be dropped off at any of the Salvation Army locations, or if the donation is particularly large, a pick-up can be organized. The Salvation Army will distribute and donate goods to those in need.

Church Donations

Every spiritual leader knows his parish. He has good knowledge of those less fortunate and their needs. Even if you don't go to church, you can approach a spiritual leader and ask if he accepts clothing donations.

Homeless Shelters

A homeless shelter in your area might be happy with a clothing donation. The homeless need more than food and shelter; they need a change of clothing, too. If at all possible, clothing and shoes should be marked by size. It makes distributing garments a whole lot easier.

Animal Shelters

Animal shelters can do with clothing donations, too. The shelter can sell the clothing to a thrift shop and keep the proceeds for food and medical care for the animals. If they cannot sell the clothing, they can use them in the cages, so the animals have something soft and warm to sleep on.

Donate to a School

Before donating to a school, you might want to pick up the phone and get in touch with the principal. If needy children attend the school, the principal will know which children can benefit from a clothing donation. You can set up an appointment and arrange for a drop off.

Personal Donation

If you prefer to donate clothing privately rather than through an organization, open your eyes and ears for a family in need. If you feel awkward about approaching the family, perhaps you can leave a clothing donation on their doorstep.
