How to Tie a Necktie

It may seem like an impossible puzzle to figure out, but learning how to tie a necktie is actually much easier than it might seem on your first try. Once you get the basic knots down, the task turns into a breeze.

If you're a beginner, notice that neckties have a fat side and a thin side. The fat side goes in front and the thin one goes in back. A Windsor, half-Windsor and four-in-hand are the three basic knot styles used with neckties.

Windsor
Start with the fat end of the tie about 1/3 longer than the thin end. Bring the fat end across the thin and through the back of the loop to the front. Cross the fat end behind the thin, back to the front and through the loop on the other side.

Pull the fat end around the thin front right to left, or left to right, and to the back. Pull the fat end from the back up through the loop and slide it into the front knot. Pull the fat end to tighten the tie until it sits under the fold of your collar.

Half-Windsor
Start with the fat end of the tie slightly longer than the thin end. Cross the fat end over the thin and bring the fat end through the front of the loop to the back.

Cross the fat end over the thin from right to left, or left to right, and up through the back of the loop to the front. Slide the fat end of the tie into the knot and tighten the tie until it's sitting under your shirt collar.

Four-In-Hand
Start with the fat end of the tie slightly longer than the thin end. Cross the fat end over the thin end and to the back. Bring the fat end to the front and over the thin end again.

Pull the fat end through the back of the loop to the front. Slip the fat end into the knot and tighten the tie until it sits under the fold of your collar.
