There are generally two types of management leadership styles: authoritarian and democratic. Both are effective in their own ways, depending on the skills and knowledge of the workers, the type of work done and the desired results.

Authoritarian Management Style: The authoritarian management style consists of a manager who operates with the idea that employees do what they're told and fulfill the job as outlined by bosses and determined by production expectations. Democratic Management Style: This style centers more on the contributions of employees in an ever-evolving workplace. Democratic managers feel that the more employees contribute to their work environment, the more ownership they will feel and therefore increase their productivity and satisfaction. This management leadership style is more interested in give and take among employees as well, believing that group input is more beneficial and adjusting the work environment to comply with the majority. A democratic manager will focus on team building, social harmony and a cooperative consensus when it comes to getting the job done.

Which Works for You? Most experts agree that a balance between the two major management styles makes the best manager, although every manager will display a dominant management style. Since there are different office dynamics in every workplace, a good manager must identify the personality types of the office, the office dynamic as a whole and the best type of motivation for that particular office. An effective manager would then vary the management skills according to what works the best and delivers results.
