Think first about what makes successful relationships happen outside of work. Respect, compassion, honesty, strength and common values are qualities of effective relationships. The key is to nurture these qualities in the workplace. If people don't have these qualities in their daily lives outside of work, it will be important for you to help them achieve them personally. This is a different approach from the team building projects or team building games model. But helping people to relate to each other as decent human beings will make people happier overall. Those who feel respected, valued and treated with compassion and honesty will naturally relate to each other that way, and your team performance will improve.
How is this done?
Get to know each person on a personal level. Find out what they like to do outside of work and where they think their talents lie. Find out what they do to relax and what issues they care about. Plan development opportunities to address these topics, as well as to improve the work environment. Perhaps training in stress management through yoga would be beneficial? Or a lunchtime barbeque for clients and staff for social interaction? Think of each person as a whole person instead of someone you just see at work, and the possibilities for creating the optimal work environment will naturally develop.
