A Time Management Plan: Simple Ways to Get Your Life Under Control

By: Dee Jones

Who needs a time management plan? Well, pretty much everyone. If you have to do more than three or four things a day, and there are other people depending on you to get certain things done, creating a simple time management plan can have amazing benefits. And the time management system you use doesn't have to be complex or complicated. A few basic time management tools can help bring order to the chaos of your busy life.

A Calendar

A calendar is one of the most important components of any time management plan. It can keep you from forgetting important dates, like birthdays and anniversaries. It can also help you remember important meetings, doctor's appointments, and when certain bills have to be paid. The kind of calendar you choose doesn't matter. The most important thing is that it's easy to use. This means you can make new entries fast, and you should be able to access your calendar at any time and quickly see what important dates are coming up.

A Schedule

Another important component of a time management plan is the schedule. Most of us have a lot of things to do every day, and not having to worry about when to do them can be a huge mental relief. So create a schedule to block out time for all of your daily and weekly tasks. Look at your schedule, and you'll know that you'll be cooking dinner tonight at 6pm. Or you'll be running errands on Saturday from 2pm to 4pm. Or you have to keep Thursday afternoon open to take your kid to Little League practice.

A To Do List

Have you ever had one of those days where you felt like you did a lot of stuff, but didn't really get anything done? Well one of the benefits of a time management plan is that it helps you do the "right" things, rather than a lot of little things that, when you think about it, aren't really that crucial.

With a To Do List, you write down all of the things you have to do today. And then you grade each item on your list.

  •     A = Things that really need to be done, and done today.
  •     B = Things that really need to be done, but can wait until tomorrow, or the next day.
  •     C = Things that need to be done, but can wait a week or two.
  •     D = Things that really don't need to be done, or can be put on hold indefinitely.

You spend your day focusing on the As, and then the Bs. If you have enough time left to work on the Cs, fine, but they can wait. And the Ds can be crossed out all together.

Prioritizing the items on your list in this way means you'll focus more time on the things that need to be done, and less time on tasks that aren't really urgent or important.

Life can get pretty hectic. But, with a simple time management plan, you can take control of your busy day.
