One particular career that can utilize effective time management strategies is sales. The focus of sales is to make money-money for both the sales representative and the company. This means that the salesperson should focus primarily on contacting current and potential clients during the working hours that these people are most likely available. Paperwork, reports and other non-revenue generating work should be handled at a different time during the day.

What are the crucial time periods during your workday? Do you spend this time as focused as possible? Spend your time doing non-essential paperwork during these off times.

If you do not have crucial time periods during your day, ask yourself when you are the most productive. If you are more energized first thing in the morning, try to work on your more challenging or difficult tasks then.

Understand the 80/20/Mantra
The 80/20 adage states, for a sales representative, that 20 percent of his or her customers will generate 80 percent of his or her sales. In reality, that ratio may be 90/10 or 70/30. This does not mean that a good sales rep ignores the customers who don't generate the largest amount of revenue. That revenue may actually be more profitable than revenue generated by key customers.

In addition, a buyer from a smaller organization could move to a larger organization and take the sales rep along for the ride. However, the reality is that more time will be spent with key accounts than smaller or slower growing accounts.

What Are You Really Doing During Workdays?
Do you know what part of your job generates the most results? The trick with this is to find activities that make you feel like you are working, when in fact, you are wasting time. For example, unless your job is related to social networking, you may be spending too much time reading blogs and leaving comments that really don't add to your overall productivity. This is not to say that you should not learn about new trends. Perhaps you should cut down on the time spent or do your reading during hours that are not key productive times.
