Time management advice is essential if you find yourself stressed with the everyday work tasks you assume each day. Work demands and goals may be increasing at an alarming rate. This makes understanding and using time management strategies all the more important.
Creative Time Management Tips
Do the least desirable first. Did you have a favorite subject and a subject that you detested when you were in school? Chances are that you procrastinated on the despised subject homework as long as you could. Now that you are an adult, procrastination is out. Given equal priority, do the least fun task first. Get it out of the way. The fun task can be your reward.
Keep an organized desk. Know where everything is that you need to do your job. Looking for lost supplies or a misplaced file is a waste of time.
Delegate. Even if you know that the project may not be completed as well as you might do it, delegate the task. If you keep every project on your desk, none of the tasks may be completed effectively. You will also not help your staff grow in skills and self-confidence unless you challenge them, which is part of your job as a manager.
Keep track of your tasks. If you want to gauge how your time is spent each week, keep a log of your activities for a few days and how much time that you spend on each task.
Keeping in mind that you do need breaks and do not want to become a robot, where are you spending your time? Is one employee or project more demanding than it should be in comparison to others? Is there a solid reason for the demands, such as the employee is a new hire? How can you effectively switch time away to more important issues? The answer may be as simple as closing your door for an hour every day or as complex as examining your behavioral interactions with your staff.
Don't plan unnecessary meetings. If you have to have a meeting, have a purpose. Meetings for the sake of meetings are a waste of time. Have an agenda and stick to it. Start the meeting on time and try to keep the meeting on track.
There are a number of good books on learning time management available to you. In addition, you can purchase time management computer software to help you keep track of your projects.
Distraction in the office is inevitable, but you can stay focused and put your work hours toward work-not toward looking for lost documents, surfing the Web or talking about last night's episode of "Survivor." |
Regardless of your career, effective time management is essential to ensure an efficient and stress-free workday. There are many examples of effective time management strategies that can fit into any type of job, providing you with a plan for your project and unexpected surprises. |
