How to Publish a Magazine

By: Jennifer Maughan

Knowing how to publish a magazine involves more than just selecting an eye-catching photo for the cover. In fact, the job is anything but glamorous. Niche magazines can be a lucrative business, or they can quickly send the publisher under unless certain strategies are followed. Like many publishing endeavors-from books to newspapers-the key to success is finding a niche, providing information for that niche and securing advertisers eager to market to that niche.

Editing
The content of the magazine must fit what readers want and must do it better than any competitors on the market. Distinguishing the focus and function of your magazine is key to its success. Analyze what makes your magazine different from competitors, how it is better and areas where it falls short. Determine what the target demographic is seeking and what kinds of advertisers are seeking that demographic. Make adjustments continually to improve and perfect the content.

In the beginning, you may be able to solicit solid content from new writers seeking exposure, or from industry professionals wishing to reach a target audience. However you secure the reading material for the magazine, it's crucial to present it as well-edited and professional. Photography, graphics and layout should also be done professionally.

Production And Printing
The startup cost of a magazine can be reasonable as far as layout and production goes, but magazines can be expensive to print. Determine such budget-specific areas as how many pages, 2- or 4-color pages versus black and white, number or circulation of magazines and even the type of paper and the method of binding. Create a Web site that coincides with the magazine's publication: It should contain enough information to get readers excited to read the magazine as well as provide information about subscriptions and allow advertisers to get in contact with you.

Marketing
Magazines don't make money from subscriptions; rather, it's the advertising dollars that bring in the profits. If possible, secure advertising for the initial publication or two by offering free ads or by selling ads at a significantly reduced rate. Get the word out about your magazine as well, via online promotions, attendance at trade shows and even sending a complimentary subscription to certain demographic groups.
