Where Is Silver Found?

Where is silver found, and why is it so valuable? This precious metal has been in existence since recorded human history. It is one of the most important commodities because it is both beautiful and useful, and it works well as an alloy. For example, sterling silver, often used in silverware, is made up of both silver and copper. Archaeological research indicates that silver has been found across the globe, although it is mined in only a few places.

A Brief History Of Silver
Since 700 BC, societies have used silver as money. Thousands of years before that, artisans made jewelry and religious artifacts from silver. Although no one knows exactly who first discovered silver, it is understood that the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians and Phoenicians all knew of this precious metal. Egyptians, who believed silver was more valuable than gold, drew hieroglyphics that praised silver. Babylonians used silver bowls and tools. Phoenicians discovered that silver kept water, wine and vinegar from spoiling, so they used silver bottles. In 700 BC, people in Lydia were the first to discover silver's usefulness as money. This idea was so popular that silver became a primary currency for many civilizations and nations, most notably the United States, which maintained the silver and gold standard until the 1970s.

Where Is Silver Located?
Silver is found all over the world, and in some cases it is found during the gold mining process. One of the most prolific producers of silver is Mexico. Mexico has been mining silver actively since 1546. Other large miners of silver are China, Australia, Russia and Poland. Within the United States, Nevada produces the most silver. Silver is also mined in Alaska, as well as the eastern part of the United States.

Fun Fact
Silver’s uses aren’t limited to jewelry and utensils. Since the time of Hippocrates, silver has been noted for its health properties because it has a natural resistance to different types of bacteria and viruses.
