Knowing how to fill out a deposit slip properly is a good idea so you can deposit money into your business or personal account if your ATM isn't working. With the prevalence of direct deposit for employee paychecks, filling out a deposit slip is a transaction that may cause some people to get confused. If you are using a deposit slip from your own checkbook, the identification information should be pre-printed. It will include your name and address and perhaps a phone number, generally in the top left corner. If you are working with business deposit slips, the company info should be included.
Pre-printed slips will have the bank name and address, as well as the bank's routing number and your bank account number across the bottom. For a blank deposit slip, you'll need to fill in your bank account number, so be sure to bring that with you to the bank, and guard it carefully, as you don't want anyone else to get that information. There are usually blank spaces or squares with just enough spaces to contain the bank account number. Look for a place to fill in the account number on the bottom left of the slip.
The right side of the deposit slip is generally where people get confused. On the right should be a series of entry spots with text on one side and spaces for writing on the other:
Cash: This is where you write down the amount of cash you are depositing.
Checks: There may be several lines on the slip to list multiple checks that are being deposited. Write in the amount of each check. If there are more checks than there are lines, check on the back of the slip for more entry lines.
Check Total: Add the total amount from the checks listed previously and from the back, and enter the total.
Subtotal: Add the cash and check total to get the deposit subtotal.
Less Cash Received: If you will be taking cash out, write the amount in this line. If you are using this option, note that there is a signature line on the left side of the slip that should be labeled with something like "signature for cash received."
Total: This is the total amount of the deposit-all cash and checks-less the cash received.
