Tips for Job Interviews

What to do before the interview

  • Prepare yourself. Remember that interviewers are going to ask a lot of questions about you and you should be prepared with specific example. Do not just say that you are a good communicator or an honest person, give an example of how this is true.
  • Know what employers are looking for. This list includes communication skills, experience, academics, leaderships, etc.
  • Research the company. Know the products, services, competitors, goals, etc. The company website is a good place to get this information.
  • Prepare questions. This shows the interviewer that you put time into thinking about your interview.
  • Prepare extra copies of your resume and references
  • Bring a nice pen and folder with notes or other questions.
  • Dress appropriately. Business casual is best but keep in mind that it is better to be overdressed than to arrive under-dressed.
  • TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE!

What to do at the interview

  • Your interview begins long before the actual interview because you might be observed by others to see what your behavior is like.
  • Your handshake is important. Use a firm grip and look the interviewer directly in the eye
  • Smile!
  • Do not sit until you are offered to do so.
  • Sell yourself. Do not give a biography of your life, tell the interviewer why you should be hired. Tell him or her about your talents, skills, experience, etc. However, do not overdo it by being arrogant or underplay it by being laid back.
  • Confidence is key.
  • Do not talk negatively about past (or current) employers.
  • Let the interviewer bring up the salary.
  • At the end of the interview, summarize what you talked about and why they should hire you.
  • Get the business card of the person who interviewed you
  • Ask when you will hear from them if they did not already state it.

What to do after the interview

  • Reflect on how you did and make notes about how you can improve for next time
  • Send a Thank-You note within 48 hours. Hand written notes are better because they are more personal and show that you put more effort into it; however, typed letters or emails work well also.
  • Complete any follow-up instructions given to you by the interviewer.
