Turning A Temp Job Into A Full-Time Deal

A temp job can be more than a way to make a quick buck and pass the time. If you make an effort at your temp job, you might get noticed by your employer, and it could lead to a full-time job. Here’s how to go from temp to perm:

Observe the office and the daily work. Not only is your employer auditioning you, but you are also auditioning them. You are getting a preview of what it might be like to work in this industry or at this specific company.

Consider your work a real job. Even if you are just answering phones, you want to do your best. Listen closely when you are training, ask questions and make an effort.

Get to know people. While you don’t want to get over-involved since you might not be there long, meeting your peers and being pleasant could lead to networking opportunities and leads for other jobs.

Check your network. If you have a profile on LinkedIn or are building your job network, find out if anyone within your network works at this company. Ask a friend for an introduction, and then ask the contact out for coffee.

Ask about full-time work. If you hear of an open position, feel qualified for it and get along with everyone else in the office, ask your supervisor about applying for the position.

Be realistic. In a down economy, employers might take advantage of the relatively low expense of temp workers. After all, they don’t have to pay temp workers benefits. If you think your employer can’t bring you on full-time for budget reasons, make the most of the situation, and try to work on projects that will look good on your resume or in your portfolio.

Even if the temp job doesn’t work out, you can learn which skills are in demand in that field, accumulate references, make connections and train yourself for the future.
