With the hectic pace of modern life threatening to consume everything in its path, time management has become increasingly crucial. Technology provides countless gadgets that help us make better use of our time. But the reality is that, in order to fully manage time, we need to develop certain skills to be truly effective.
Good time management comprises a number of core attributes. You must be able to clearly identify what you want to achieve. You must be able to define your limits and work progressively through a clear series of tasks. Techniques such as writing and maintaining to-do lists can also help. But above all, good time management requires the ability to turn intention into commitment. Everybody has the will to do something. It is the commitment to see it to completion that sets good time management apart from bad.
Time management is often seen as a business skill and, true enough, without good time management, many professionals would struggle to hold down a good job. But time management is not a skill to be used solely in the workplace. Indeed, for students, working moms and homemakers, time management is just as important as it is to the career professional.
Good time management will help support family life. Family members will get to spend time with each other and see their friends and colleagues. Hobbies and sports will be fully supported, alongside simpler activities such as going to the movies or just watching a movie at home.
The reality is that everybody has a finite amount of free time. Just because that time isn't spent with an employer doesn't mean it shouldn't be managed in a similar manner. Nor does it make that time any less crucial.
The ability to manage time often supports the ability to build relationships. Close friendships rely on good time management, because spending quality time together will often require planning and coordination. Partnerships, marriages and romances rely on time management. Few people forgive someone who forgets a birthday or anniversary. Planning for and celebrating these events requires time management.
Conversely, bad time management can be highly disruptive, both in and out of the workplace. Relationships often suffer (and break up) because you were unable to do what you said you would do, when you said you would do it. Resentment and disappointment between individuals often grows because one person has let the other down.
Bad time management also leads to a rather unrewarding emotional life. Badly managed time is often wasted. You are likely to feel as though you have never quite achieved what you wanted to, leaving you with a sense of expectation of something better. Often, individuals who are unable to manage their time start to look for culprits elsewhere, always trying to find a reason to blame someone else for something they should have been able to do alone.
In short, nobody should ever underestimate the importance of good time management. Acquiring and adapting these skills will boost your career, strengthen your personal and family life and give you a much greater sense of achievement and well-being. It's hard to argue against a case as compelling as that.
