Now, more than ever, it is important that you learn ways to save money in your budget. Take the time to sit down and analyze your spending habits. Are you a spendthrift, or do people open their eyes in shock when you open up your wallet? Evaluate your life's goals. Do you plan on retiring early? What kind of lifestyle are you willing to live to make your goals a reality?
The following suggestions can help you decide what changes might be needed, if any, in your budget to help you reach your goals.
1) Pull together all of your current bills. Evaluate what you are paying for. This is your hard earned money, so be brutal in your examination of the services you are receiving. Are you using everything that you are paying for, or can you do without the "extras."
Can you eliminate any bills? For example, if you have a cell phone is it possible to cancel your land line phone?
Consolidate your bills. Many times a provider will bundle services, however they want to maximize their profit, so they won't often tell current customers about discounts they provide. Often, if you contact your current provider, they will find a way to "keep your business" by beating or at least matching a competitor's offer.
2) Find alternatives in your entertainment budget. You don't have to pass up on fun and entertainment just because you are living more simply. Get to know your local library. You can borrow movies rather than buy, or rent them. Get involved with your community. Your local VFW or church, might offer bingo night. This is an inexpensive and fun thing to do that can also be profitable. Bingo!
During the holidays many communities hold parades and festivals downtown. This gives the downtown businesses a chance to open their doors during non business hours, which can increase their sales, and provide the opportunity for neighbors and friends to get together for a good time. It's possible too, that you just might find that last minute gift...at a discount!
3) Try the store brands. Often, you will find no noticeable difference, and the cost savings can be substantial. Cut food costs by using food coops, meal exchanges, etc. Buy locally grown produce whenever possible, and check out the farms offering you the chance to "pick your own." Not only do you get fresh, off the vine produce, but you get fresh air and exercise!
4) Consolidate your trips to avoid wasting fuel. Bike wherever possible, rather than drive to save fuel costs. Make every trip count by doing multiple things the same time.
5) Pay your bills on time. Late fees really take a bite out of your budget.
With just a little imagination, you can find ways to save money, stretch your budget and enjoy your life more, without it costing you a dime to do it!
