A more sturdy form of luggage tag is to make your own cardboard and paper tag. You can do them in bright colors so that they are easily recognizable. If you have sewing skills, you can also sew your own tags so that your luggage can be seen easily.
Making Your Own Sturdy Cardboard Tags
Anyone can make a do-it-yourself luggage tag. All you'll need is the cardboard from a cereal or shoe box, neon 3 X 5 index cards, a Sharpie marker, clear packing tape, a hole punch and a zip tie.
Start out by cutting the cardboard from your shoe box into a shape that is slightly longer than the 3 x 5 cards. Cut out two 3 x 7 rectangles from your cardboard for each luggage tag you are making. Place the two cardboard rectangles in between two three-by-five index cards, and leave the extra two inches of the cardboard to one side of the index cards. You can use a bit of tape or glue stick to keep all of the pieces together while you are taping. You can use your Sharpie marker to write your initials on one side of the tag and your address on the other. You can also draw a distinctive design that you will recognize from afar.
Once you've completed your design, cover the entire tag with clear plastic packing tape. Make sure to seal the edges. Finally, punch a hole in the middle of the 2-inch-long space at the top of the cardboard. Use a zip tie to attach the cardboard tag to your luggage, with the initials or design facing outward.
