How to Open a Daycare

By: Courtney Ramirez

If you are interested how to open a daycare, become a preschool teacher or get into daycare management, you may be wondering how to get started. Childcare is a thriving business, as there is always a shortage of well-qualified caregivers and affordable options for parents who work outside of the home. The good news is that it is not that difficult to get started in a career with children. In less than a year, you can have a fully operational daycare up and running, or be ready to teach in one if you don't want the responsibility of running your own business.

Receive The Proper Education: For proper licensing, education is required to work with children. Check ahead of time for the requirements in your state, but Early Childhood Education units from a local community college are usually all that you need to get started. For certain licenses, a full 2-year degree may be required, but you can get started for as little as one semester of coursework. Check with your state's licensing board to see exactly what is required. The education you need will vary depending upon your goals as a care provider.

Prepare And Child-Proof Your Home: To obtain your license, you will also need to have a clean, safe and proper facility to run your business. Many daycare owners operate their business out of the comfort of their home, but this too must be deemed proper for child care. Your house or other business location will be inspected prior to your receiving a license, so as soon as you are able, it is good to start getting your location in order. Childproof any area where kids will have access during the course of their stay, making sure that cleaning chemicals and prescriptions are out of reach and locked away.

Obtain License And Advertise: The last steps to opening a daycare are to apply for and receive your license to operate a business. Once your license is received, you are free to begin caring for children. This means you will need to put out advertising for your new business and market yourself as a reliable and competent caregiver. Be ready to provide references and an application or contract for the parents to sign. Having sample menus and a schedule of daily activities to provide to prospective customers is also a good idea. Allowing parents to observe your business in action will also draw in new customers, and soon your business will be thriving.
