Types of Tourism Businesses

By: Gabriel Miller

Numerous types of tourism businesses have developed in response to the desire to travel. While the jobs performed by travel agents may be the best known, many other businesses cater to tourists. Agents and tour planners help organize the basics of a trip, but upon arrival every traveler has many needs that must be met. Anyone thinking of opening a tourism-related business doesn't have to limit himself to travel planning. In fact, there might be an unmet tourism need nearby.

Transportation Services
Airplanes serve as the preferred vehicle for long-distance travel, and travelers often arrive at their destination without a car. While car rental services may be located near the airport, tourists often need to use shuttles or buses to get to their hotel or destination. This being the case, transportation services are a crucial type of tourism business. Many entrepreneurs have started their own shuttle or bus service, competing by offering low prices and safe transport. Beyond buses and shuttles, a savvy businessman may create a ferry or charter boat service, offering reasonable rates and scenic views. Another option would be to offer parking plus a shuttle service for anyone who needs to leave his car at the airport during a lengthy trip but who doesn't want to pay the high airport parking prices.

Accommodations
Assuming travelers don't have a home waiting for them at every destination, they will need a place to stay. Providing accommodations is a highly competitive sector of the tourism business, as options range from grand hotels to tiny bed and breakfasts to extended-stay business suites. People native to the area where a tourist has arrived may choose to rent out their cabin or cottage for a weekly rate. Many tourists find this attractive, as the setting has more personality and local flavor than what can be found in a hotel. Providing accommodations can be a lucrative business, as long as business owners market themselves to a specific niche and offer competitive prices.

Retail Establishments
Whether it's a restaurant serving native food or a small shop offering key chains and postcards, retail establishments at a tourist destination can rake in serious cash. Tourists tend to have a desire to document their experience, and a business person eager to capitalize on this desire may find herself handsomely rewarded. Similarly, restaurants serving local food can do quite well, and the costs of running a small authentic restaurant can make profits soar. Indeed, retail services are a critical aspect of the tourism business industry.
