Cost of Living Adjustments: Know Before You Move

By: Jaceson Maughan

When you are making a move to a new area, it helps to determine the cost of living adjustment for your new home. It could affect everything from the purchase of a new home to whether you'll accept that new job.

Calculate the Difference
There are many cost of living calculators available online. What they do is take your current salary and location, and then compare it to a new location. The output reveals how much more or less salary you'll need to keep the same standard of living you've come to expect in your current home. Using a variety of economic indicators, data on home prices, wages, property taxes and even the cost of groceries is figured in.

Can You Afford a New Location?
To move to a new city, you should ask yourself some questions in order to determine if you will enjoy the same quality of life you currently have. The answer will allow you to evaluate whether the change in lifestyle is worth it or not. Some things to ask yourself are about your housing options, whether buying or renting. Some urban cities have extremely expensive housing, while more rural areas tend to be more affordable.

However, salaries for the suburbs are often much lower than in the big cities. Consider everything that contributes to your typical day, such as the distance you commute, how much gas you use, your current property and sales tax and even utilities.

Balance Salary and Cost of Living
Ultimately, it is a personal decision on what kind of cost of living adjustments you are willing to make. If a salary is 15 percent lower than where you are now, but the cost of living rates are 25 percent lower than where you are now, you'll still come out ahead. If you are thinking of moving to a place where the cost of living is higher, make sure your new salary is enough to compensate for that.
