How to Make a Press Kit

By: Courtney Ramirez

If you learn how to make a press kit, you can present your small business or company professionally to the world. Although many companies don't think about how they will appear to the press, taking the time to put together a press kit can make the difference in how much media attention you receive. A press kit is an essential part of small business marketing, and every business owner should be able to put together a simple one.

What A Press Kit Is
Every small business needs a press kit. A press kit is all that a member of the media needs in order to be able to put together a story on your business. Considering how expensive advertising these days is, it makes good sense to make it as easy as possible for your business to be featured on the news, in the newspaper, in magazines or even on a blog.

How To Put Together A Press Kit
Your press kit should be compiled together in a pocket folder so that all of the documents are kept neat and tidy. At the very least, you should have a flyer and a business card. However, if you have time to prepare, you should also include some other important information. Your company's press kit should have your brochure. If you don't have a brochure for your small business, you should use this as your opportunity to make one.

Include Company Bios
Your press kit will have a bit more information in it than a sales kit. Your customers want to know what you can offer them, but a reporter or blogger will want to know the people behind the business in order to develop a unique angle for their story. You can help them out by including a one-page bio of all the company officers or managers. In the case of a very small business, you will need only your bio.

Other Documents To Include
In addition to sales materials and bios, you should offer additional information about the company. If you have a recent press release, include that in your folder. Consider coming up with quotes about your company that you can use in your press kit. Add company photos and other pictures if applicable.

Make Your Press Kit Digital
These days you are just as likely to have your business featured on a Web site as in a newspaper. Rather than snail-mailing your press kit to a reporter, scan in all the documents and create a digital press kit that you can mail to anyone who needs it.
