Designing houseboat plans may seem like a daunting task, but knowing a bit about houseboats and design can make this job much easier.

Start off by contemplating houseboat financing and which kind of boat you'd like to have built. Consider the time you plan on spending on the houseboat and where it will be taken.

• Trailerable: a houseboat that can be towed by a small truck. Usually much smaller in size than the other models, this boat is perfect for people just looking to go on the boat for a short period of time.

Make a list of items and amenities that you want to include in your boat.  Study some blueprints of other houseboats and try to tour some in person as well. This will help you to get a better idea of functional layouts and how to conserve space well for a smaller boat.  

If you're using the boat to travel on, you should consider the different options for building materials, engines, fuel and more.

Next, you'll need to find a company to build the boat. Once you find one, you'll need to schedule a meeting to go over your plans and discuss deadlines and budget. When the boat is complete, you'll be asked back in to take a tour of it.
