What can I do to my engine to improve gas mileage? Gas mileage seems to be on everybody's minds these days. Luckily, there is a number of things that you can do to tune your car for better gas mileage.
An easy place to start is to make sure your oil and engine coolant are full or at least at acceptable levels. Getting regular oil changes will help keep engine sludge from forming which hinders the engine's performance, knocking gas mileage down. Another easy fix is using the proper octane of fuel for your vehicle. This does not mean you should go out and only buy premium gasoline. Check your owner's manual to find the proper fuel octane. You should also change your fuel filter as needed as this will also lead to greater fuel efficiency for your vehicle.
If you know your way around an engine, you can replace the air intake system that came with your vehicle. This is considered the stock air intake system and is the same on every car of the same year and model. Installing a cold air intake will increase the air-flow as well as pump cooler air into the engine. Engines use less fuel when driving in colder temperatures. Even just regularly changing your vehicle's standard air filter will improve gas mileage.
For those who like a challenge, you can install a hydrogen fuel converter. The hydrogen will supplement the regular fuel you use. This gives a few other benefits as well. Hydrogen burns cleaner than gasoline meaning your engine will not experience the heavy buildup and other issues that come from using gasoline. Your engine will also sound quieter. The biggest benefit however is in the jump in gas mileage your vehicle will get.
