Manual Transmission Advantages

Whenever you consider purchasing another car, whether it is used or brand spanking new, you will need to decide whether you want an automatic transmission or a manual transmission. The simple difference between the two is that the automatic one does the shifting for you, and with the manual one, you have to use the clutch and do your own shifting. Here are some manual transmission advantages.

Better Gas Mileage

The manual transmission gets better gas mileage because you control the rev range. You decide when to downshift and by doing that, you can avoid all of the needless gear changes that take place with an automatic transmission. The manual transmissions are lighter weight, and that means you won't need as much gas to move your car.

Less Expensive

Cars with a manual transmission cost less to purchase and the transmissions cost considerably less to replace if they go out. They are also cheaper to maintain. Many times when a manual transmission begins to act up, it is not a problem with the transmission itself. Usually it is a matter of simply replacing the clutch.

Easier to Start or Tow

One of the biggest manual transmission advantages is that you can push it to start it when the battery gets low. You don't have to have the battery charged. If you break down somewhere, you can also tow it any distance you need to without tearing up the transmission.

Better Control

Cars with a manual transmission are easier to control on steep downgrades or in bad weather. You can downshift and get a much faster response. This is especially important when the roads are snowy or icy. It will also allow you to slow down quickly if your brakes fail. This type of transmission gives the vehicle greater power on hills when you shift down.

Safer

A car with a manual transmission is much less likely to be stolen than one with an automatic transmission. The No. 1 reason is that many people don't know how to drive one. That alone lowers the possibility of theft considerably.
