How to Replace a Cabin Air Filter

By: Maeve Rich

Do you know how to replace a cabin air filter? Anyone who has owned their car for awhile has probably had to get a new cabin air filter. You'll know it's time for a new cabin air filter if your windshield is foggy and you have trouble clearing it. If you're a do-it-yourselfer or want to save some money on car maintenance, you may want to know how to replace a cabin air filter. It's not too difficult; here are some tips.

The cabin air filter is a filter that allows fresh air to circulate into the car. When your cabin air filter becomes clogged, it can stop air from getting inside. A wet cabin air filter may cause a moldy smell to permeate your car. Cabin air filters are common on newer cars but have been around only roughly 20 years, so if you have an older car, you might not have a cabin air filter.

The first step is to find your cabin air filter. Try to locate it in your owner's manual before attempting to just look for it, as it can be tricky to find. Open the hood of your car and check in the outside air intake or under the dash. If your cabin air filter is under your dash it will be above the blower or between the blower and the HVAC case.

Now it's time to replace the cabin air filter. First remove the air intake screen, then the rain and snow deflector. Now the filter element will be exposed; remove that as well. You may have to maneuver the tab holding it.

Clean the area where the filter element was, using a clean, dry cloth or a vacuum cleaner; don't put anything wet inside.

Now you can replace the filter element, followed by the rain and snow deflector and finally the air intake screen.

You're all set. Next time you drive you should be able to notice a fresh flow of air in your car.
