How to Wax a Car

Learn how to wax a car to keep an older car looking brand new.  A good wax job will also keep a new car looking like it just came from the showroom. More importantly, waxing also protects a car from harmful elements associated with the weather.

Preparation

Before you wax, make sure the car is clean from any dirt, dust or soot. Doing this makes it possible for the wax to cover all surfaces evenly. Any dirt that mixes with the wax could possibly scratch the paint. It is also wise to do the job in an open area away from any trees. Clean the vehicle by spraying the dirt  off with water from a garden hose. Once the car is dry, it's time to apply the wax.

What You Will Need

Containers of wax usually come with a circular pad that is used to apply the product. However, you will need some old rags or soft towels to take the wax off. Usually, an old tee shirt, perhaps that old one that you wore in high school, will work. Tear it into strips and use it for some good. If you want to go out and buy some specialty cloths for the job, feel free to do that, too. You'll need some wax as well, of course. Your auto parts store can recommend the right brand for you.

Applying the Wax

Now, it's time for the waxing fun. You need to have a system. The traditional way is to start at the roof, unless the car is a convertible, then work from the hood of the car down one side to the trunk area, then around the other side, heading back towards the front.

Applying the wax is the easy part. Open the container of wax and dab the pad it came with into it. You can also use an old t-shirt or soft cloth here. Wax resembles and has the same consistency as a tub of butter. Put a modest amount on the pad at first. As you go through the process, you'll figure out the right amount. The wax will appear wet and shiny when applied to the surface of the car. All surfaces should be covered with a thin coat. Too much wax will take forever to dry.  If you can write your name in the wax, it's too thick. The best technique to apply the wax is by small circular motions. Imagine Daniel Larusso in the Karate Kid. Remember when Miyagi said, "Wax on, wax off"? Same thing here: nice circular motions.

Removing the Wax

When the wax turns white and looks like chalk, it is ready to be removed. Take a nice dry cloth and wipe away. Again, nice smooth circular motions takes off the wax beautifully. Once you've finished removing the wax, step back and admire the shine.
