Learning how to change windshield wiper fluid can actually save your life: driving with a dirty windshield is both annoying and dangerous. Good visibility is crucial for all drivers to safely operate their vehicles and avoid all potential accidents.
What is Windshield Wiper Fluid?
Wiper fluid is released onto the windshield from wiper nozzles when the "wash" function of the windshield wipers is activated. This fluid will clean your windshield of dirt, dust and any stains left behind from insects, leaves, etc.
Wiper fluid is made from water, soap and alcohol. If you absolutely can't find a place that sells wiper fluid and you are in an emergency situation, you can replace fluid with water to clean your windshield. Soap should never be used as a substitute, however.
If you are operating your vehicle in colder climates, you should look for windshield wiper fluid with antifreeze. This will keep ice from remaining frozen on the glass.
How to Refill Wiper Fluid
To begin, park your car on a flat surface and allow the engine to cool. You'll need windshield wiper fluid and a funnel, which are available at gas stations and auto supply stores. Next, pop the hood of your vehicle and find the part that says "Washer Fluid Only" on it. This is the windshield washer reservoir and it's usually clear.
Check the reservoir for any leaks or cracks. Then look inside the reservoir to see how much fluid is left. If it's running low, take your funnel and pour fluid inside until it reaches the top. Replace the cap of the reservoir and you'll be all set.
Be sure to check the level of the washer fluid at least once a month to keep your windshield clean and clear.
