How to Melt Chocolate Chips

Learning how to melt chocolate chips is a great skill to have in your baking arsenal. You can use melted chocolate on fruit, cookies or cake. You can even leave it on its own. Quick and easy ways to melt chocolate chips include heating them in the microwave or right on the stove.

In The Microwave
The microwave is fantastic for melting chocolate chips. You can control the amount of time you put them in the microwave, and you can check on them easily to see how the process is coming along. To start, melt a handful of chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl for about a minute. Take out the bowl, and check to make sure the chocolate is melted all the way through. Give it a good stir, and then put it back in for another 30 seconds or so. You can also melt chocolate bars in the same manner; just make sure they are cut up into small pieces that resemble chocolate chips.

On The Stove
Of course, you can also melt chocolate chips on the stove. The trick here is to melt the chocolate at a very low heat and stir constantly. This can get pretty tedious, but you will be pleased with the results. You can also use a double boiler if you have one handy. In this case, add a touch of water in the bottom of the boiler. Then add chocolate chips in the top pot. Watch the chocolate chips as they melt, and stir constantly until they’re ready. It’s best to use the melted chocolate chips right away to prevent the liquid from hardening.

Tips
Try to keep water away from chocolate chips at all times. If you add water into the bowl and try to melt it down, the chocolate will get hard and become difficult to work with. Stick with melting pure chocolate, and don’t add anything extra to the bowl, whether you’re using a microwave or a double boiler.
