Every cook should have a delicious recipe for apple dumpling desserts on hand for those off times when unexpected company is on the way. These pastries are easy to make and use one of America's favorite fruits. Who doesn't love apples?
Recipe for Apple Dumplings
Ingredients You Will Need:
6 small apples, minced
¼ cup sugar
¼ cup melted butter
1 tablespoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg
1 ½ cups flour
3 tablespoons butter
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ cup milk
Sauce:
2 cups boiling water
1 tablespoon butter
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon white flour
Wash, peel and core the apples. Then chop into tiny pieces, and place in a medium bowl. Mix the sugar, melted butter, cinnamon and nutmeg together, and pour it over the chopped apples. Stir until well blended, and then cover and set aside.
In a large bowl, mix the flour, three tablespoons butter, baking powder and milk. Knead it to make dough, and then roll it out on a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough as if you were making cinnamon rolls. Spread the apples evenly on the dough. Cut the dough into one-half-inch slices. Place the slices into the bottom of a deep baking dish, and set aside.
To make the sauce, put two cups of water on to boil, reserving about one fourth cup. Add the butter and sugar. To add the flour, place the flour into a cup, and slowly add the reserve water until you have a smooth consistency. Slowly add the flour to the boiling water. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and all is ready.
Pour the sauce over the dumplings, and bake in an oven that has been preheated to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake the dumplings for about one half hour or until the dumplings are beginning to brown.
Variations: If you want more filling in the dumplings, add nuts. Pecans are best. For a spicier dumpling, double the cinnamon, and add a little bit of allspice. This dumpling recipe can be transformed into apple cinnamon rolls just as easily. Instead of adding the sauce to the pan, cut the dumplings into one-inch pieces, spray some non-stick vegetable grease onto the pan, place the dumplings side-by-side and bake them until lightly browned. Frost while still warm, and serve immediately.
Don't get scared off by the hard-to-pronounce name; this French dessert could not be easier to make and is sure to impress anyone you serve it to. |
Apple strudel recipes call for a lot of work thanks to the delicate, flaky crust. Even though you can take a shortcut and use phyllo dough instead, there is nothing like an apple strudel made from scratch. |
