How to Make Fried Ice Cream

Fried ice cream is the king of the homemade ice cream desserts. Children marvel at the idea that frozen ice cream could possibly survive being fried. The crunchy outside and the cold inside provide a marvelous contrast, and the cinnamon coating is delicious when paired with rich, but simple ice cream.

For the best fried ice cream, use this homemade vanilla ice cream recipe to make your ice cream base.

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe
Ingredients You Will Need:
2 cups heavy cream
2 cups whole milk
1 cup granulated sugar
2 egg yolks, beaten
1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste

Combine all ingredients in food processor, and process until well blended. Pour into saucepan, and cook over medium heat, stirring continuously, for five minutes. Remove from heat, and let cool to room temperature. Pour mixture into ice cream canister, and process according to instructions.

Once ice cream is frozen, scoop balls of the ice cream and place them in plastic wrap in the freezer, with each ball individually wrapped. Check on the balls of ice cream after an hour, and make sure to mold them into perfect balls. Then freeze them for one more hour.

Fried Ice Cream Recipe
Ingredients You Will Need:
¾ cup crushed graham crackers
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
Cooking oil
4 balls of vanilla ice cream

In a bowl, combine your crushed graham crackers, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix well.

In another bowl, beat the egg and milk.

Fill a pot 4 inches deep with cooking oil. Heat over medium high heat to prepare for frying ice cream. When oil is hot enough to fry ice cream (375 degrees), take an ice cream ball from the freezer.

Remove the ice cream ball from the plastic wrap and roll in the cracker crumb mixture, pressing crumbs into the ice cream. Quickly roll the coated ice cream ball into the egg and milk mixture, and then roll a second time in the cracker crumbs. Immediately place the rolled ice cream ball in the hot oil, and allow to fry for 10 seconds per side. Remove fried ice cream ball from the oil, and roll on a paper towel to remove excess oil. Serve immediately with a sprinkling of cinnamon sugar or chocolate syrup. Fry remaining three ice cream balls in same manner.
