Ground Chicken Burgers

If you're trying to switch to more heart-healthy summer foods, you may have contemplated grilling ground chicken burgers instead of traditional hamburgers. The best chicken burgers usually have a little something extra mixed in. Because ground chicken is so low in fat content, you'll need to incorporate some olive oil to add moisture. While the olive oil will add calories and fat, it is still healthful oil, so don't worry about adding a little into your recipe.

Always prepare your grill beforehand by cleaning and oiling the grates using a paper towel and some olive oil or vegetable oil. You'll want to cook chicken burgers in a covered grill on medium heat until the juices run clear instead of pink. You can use a meat thermometer to gauge the internal temperature of the burger. It will be done when the thermometer reads 170 degrees.

Chicken burgers also benefit from being brushed with a glaze or sauce while grilling. Try making a barbeque chicken burger by brushing barbeque sauce on the meat while grilling and serving with a slice of cheese melted on top. You may want to serve the barbeque chicken burger with dill pickles, lettuce, tomato, bacon and another dollop of barbeque sauce for a delicious meal.

Other popular glazes for chicken burgers are soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, honey and marmalade.

Chicken Burger Recipe

Ingredients You Will Need:
1 pound ground chicken
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 avocado
1 fresh lemon
1 sweet onion, sliced
4 slices provolone cheese
4 buns

Butter the insides of the buns.  Set aside.

Peel and slice avocado. Squeeze lemon juice over avocado and set it aside.

Saute onion slices in butter until they caramelize. Set aside.

Mix ground chicken with olive oil and poultry seasoning. Form into four patties, no thicker than ¾ inch thick each, and put an indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent the patty from shrinking while cooking.

Heat grill to medium heat.

Place chicken burgers on grill and close cover, cooking four minutes without disturbing. Flip burgers. Cover grill again and cook three additional minutes. Check burgers to see if juice runs clear or pink. Cook until juices run clear. Add slice of cheese to each burger just long enough for cheese to melt. Place buns, buttered sides down, on the grill and toast them lightly.

Slather buns with mayonnaise (homemade mayo is the best), place the chicken burger on the bun and top with avocado and caramelized onions slices.  Enjoy!
