If you're trying to eat a low-fat diet, but you still want to enjoy burgers in the summer, you may have experimented with ground turkey burgers. Grilling poultry burgers can be a little tricky if you want them to come out as juicy and tasty as their ground beef cousins, but these recipes for turkey burgers will help to do the trick.
Make sure you prepare your grill properly before turning it on. Using a paper towel and some vegetable oil (olive oil works well and is heart healthy), oil the grates of the grill. Then preheat the grill to medium-low or medium heat.
Mix up your ground turkey burgers. Don't buy frozen premade burgers. Because ground turkey is so low in fat, you'll need to add something to make it moist and delicious. You can mix in olive oil, teriyaki sauce or barbeque sauce to add some moisture. You can also spray non-fat cooking spray on either side of the burger to add some oil and negligible calories if this appeals to you.
Form your ground turkey patties such that they are no thicker than ¾ of an inch and are no more than a half of an inch bigger than the bun on which you intend to serve them. Make sure you press the center of each patty, making a significant indentation with your thumb, so the patty will not shrink up and get too fat in the middle while cooking.
Grill turkey burgers for five minutes on the first side and three minutes on the second side, cooking in a covered grill to seal in moisture and refusing to press down on the patties with a spatula. Make sure the burgers are just done through. Cut one open to make sure the middle is no longer pink or until the internal temperature is 170 degrees.
