How to Make Bread and Butter Pickles

Basic Bread and Butter Pickle Recipe

Ingredients you will need:
4 quarts sliced medium cucumbers (about 25)
3 cups sliced onions (about four medium)
2 chopped green peppers (or one red and one green)
3 cloves sliced garlic
�" cup canning salt
5 cups sugar
3 cups cider vinegar
1 ½ teaspoons turmeric
1 ½ teaspoons celery seed
2 tablespoons mustard seed

Combine vegetables in a large bowl. Add salt. Cover with two or three trays of cracked or crushed ice and mix thoroughly. Let stand for three hours and then drain well.

Combine remaining ingredients and pour in a large kettle. Cover the cucumbers with the mixture. Heat just to a boil. Pack into hot sterilized Mason jars and seal. This recipe makes about seven pint jars.
