How to Mix a Manhattan Cocktail

If you really want to enjoy a cocktail classic, check out the Manhattan cocktail. The Manhattan is often referred to as the “King of Cocktails” for good reasons.

Manhattan Cocktail Recipe History
Like many good things, the origins of the Manhattan cocktail are somewhat cloudy. Some say that the cocktail was developed for a banquet in honor of Samuel Tilden’s election as governor of the state of New York. The banquet was held at the Manhattan Club and hosted by Lady Randolph Churchill, mother of England’s Sir Winston Churchill, in 1874. It’s name was derived from the spot it was invented: the Manhattan Club. While this is a good story, it is highly unlikely.

Another legend gives the credit to a bartender named “Black.” Black reportedly worked in a bar near Houston Street on Broadway in the 1860s.

What is generally accepted is that the Manhattan cocktail originated somewhere in New York City and has been passed down to us today, along with variations.

Recipes for Manhattan Cocktails
Please note that traditional recipes favor rye and bourbon over other types of liquor. However, you may find any of these variations as delicious as the originals.
