If you think of New Orleans and the French Quarter, then the hurricane cocktail may come to mind. Popular with both tourists and residents who visit the Quarter, Hurricane cocktails can be ordered on a "to go" basis so that you can sip and wander at the same time.
Hurricane Cocktail History
During World War II, the supplies of whiskey were rather meager due to rationing. Bar proprietors in New Orleans were forced to buy large quantities of rum in order to get small quantities of whiskey. Pat O'Brien's Bar, located in the French Quarter, was no exception to this rule. In response to the surplus of rum, Pat O'Brien's developed the Hurricane, with its signature hurricane glass.
