Mulled wine is a perfect cold weather treat to warm the hearts and bodies of those you choose to share it with. It's similar to a hot cider cocktail, but contains mostly citrus, wine, cinnamon and other tasty spices. This is an ideal drink to serve at winter cocktail parties.
Recipe for Mulled Wine
Ingredients You Will Need:
1 bottle dry red wine
1 orange (peeled and sliced)
6 cinnamon sticks
¼ tsp nutmeg
⅛ tsp ginger
⅛ tsp all spice
12 whole cloves
¼ cup sugar
In a medium-sized pot, add in your dry red wine. Here a Burgundy, a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Zinfandel, a Merlot or a Pinot Noir would work. You definitely do not need top-of-the-line wine for this recipe, so try getting a wine that's cost-effective and enjoyable. Next add in all the spices and the sugar. You're going to want to heat this mixture through, but do not bring it to a boil. Let it heat for about 15 to 20 minutes. Instead of using an orange, you can also use a lemon.
Variations
There are many different mulled wine recipes to try out if you're looking to make a few versions for guests. For another mulled wine recipe, try adding in 2 cups of brandy. This will give the wine a richer flavor and will mix perfectly with the mulling spices. You can also try adding both types of citrus: one lemon and one orange. Put the mulled wine in a glass mug and garnish it with either a few slices of lemon or a cinnamon stick.
You can also make mulled wine in a slow cooker. Just set it on the lowest setting, and watch it for about 30 minutes.
