Jamaican Coffee

By: Lisa Bower

Jamaica's coffee culture is one of the most important in the world. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is some of the most expensive and praised in the world. However, making Jamaican coffee is more than where the coffee beans come from, though this is important. Many recipes for these drinks include rum, strong coffee and whipped cream.

Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is grown in the Blue Mountain area of the country, and thus, only coffee certified by the Coffee Industry Board can be sold or marketed as Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. The coffee has a light color and a rich flavor without coffee's usual bitterness. The area produces great coffee because it has high levels of rain and good drainage. Thus, if you are going to make Jamaican coffee, you should invest in the best coffee available from the region.

The following is one of the easiest recipes for Jamaican coffee. This recipe is especially great if you want an after dinner cap to your night.

Ingredients You Will Need:
5 cups of hot coffee, ideally Jamaican Blue Mountain
1/4 shot of Tia Maria
1/4 shot of rum

In a small saucepan, combine your coffee, Tia Maria, and rum. Heat on a low heat and stir consistently so the ingredients are fully combined. Pour the coffee into a mug or brandy glasses and top with some whipped cream or finely shaved chocolate or with some cacao.

Some people like to add cacao to this recipe, and you are free to do this if you want your coffee especially sweet. Additionally, the amount of coffee you use can change depending on how you like your coffee. The more coffee you use, the stronger it will be; the more rum or chocolate you use, the sweeter and more alcoholic the drink will be.
