Half a century ago, Serendipity 3, one of New York's finest restaurants, created a drink sensation that both titillated the senses, froze the palette and brought a smile to the faces of those who tried it. Called Frozen Hot Chocolate, the sweet concoction is actually a play on words: this dessert is neither frozen nor hot.
Importance of Authenticity
To follow Serendipity's Frrrozen Hot Chocolate recipe as closely as possible, one must include shavings from approximately 14 different types of chocolate. Also, if authenticity is what you're after, frozen hot chocolate simply must be served in a goldfish-shaped goblet. And don't forget to include two straws and two spoons.
Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe
This recipe makes enough frozen hot chocolate to fill one large goblet with icy dessert. The dessert is perfect for two, so be sure to include two straws and spoons.
Ingredients:
2 cups whole milk
1 bag Ghirardelli individual chocolates (Grind up approximately 6 oz. of your favorite flavors)
3 heaping tablespoons of your favorite homemade or store bought hot chocolate mix
1 ½ teaspoons of white granulated sugar
2 to 3 cups ice cubes
Whipped cream
Simmer one cup of milk. Add the ground chocolate, sugar and powdered hot chocolate mix. Stir until everything is dissolved. Add the rest of the milk and cool to room temperature. When cool, pour the mixture into a blender and add about three generous squirts of whipped topping and stir with a spoon. When it's thoroughly stirred, add all of the ice cubes into the mix. Blend on high until the entire mixture is the consistency of slush.
Pour the concoction into the goblet, cover the top with whipped cream, add the straws and spoons, dust with ½ teaspoon of powdered cocoa and viola! You have your very own, very similar-and just as delicious-dessert as Serendipity's Frrrozen Hot Chocolate.
This particular frozen hot chocolate dessert is not to be confused with another of Serendipity's other famous frozen desserts, called Frrrozen Haute Chocolate. Frrrozen Haute Chocolate comes with a heftier price tag at $25,000 a glass. Frrrozen Haute Chocolate is a mixture of frozen milks and cocoas that are blended together with a heaping scoop of authentic gold flakes (flown in from Switzerland) and placed in a goblet encrusted with diamonds. The truffle crumbs that decorate the mountain of whipped topping are flown in from France. And what else would be expected except a solid gold spoon in which to enjoy this delicious dessert.
Though the official recipe was recently released, the frozen hot chocolate recipe above is a variation and not the original.
Once you experiment with a recipe for homemade hot chocolate, you may never let hot cocoa grace your hot chocolate mugs again. When the air turns chilly and the change in weather keeps you inside, there are few things more comforting than a mug of hot chocolate. Not to be confused with cocoa, which is a chocolate powder stripped of cocoa butter fat, hot chocolate is a seriously decadent drink. |
The history of Mexican hot chocolate stems back to Montezuma, who reportedly introduced chocolate to Hernando Cortez in the 15th century. Back then, the Aztec Indians acquired cocoa beans from the cocao tree through trade with the Mayan Indians, and referred to their special cocoa bean drink as chocolatl. Today, that same drink with some variation, is called Mexican hot chocolate. |
