Hot chocolate mix recipes have been one of the hottest and most enjoyed jar gifts. The beauty of a gift jar filled with hot chocolate mix is that hot chocolate mix recipes can be changed and rearranged to fit anyone's style and taste. For instance, if you're giving a gift jar of hot chocolate mix to your sister and you know her children love marshmallows, you can always use a larger jar and add double the marshmallows than you normally would.

Hot Chocolate Mix in a Jar
Because everyone's preference is slightly different, you can vary your ingredient choices based on the recipient of the gift. A tried and true basic homemade hot chocolate mix recipe should always be included with your gift jar.

Muddy Snowmen
Muddy Snowmen is whimsical and delicious and the perfect gift to give to a child. Muddy Snowmen hot chocolate mix is exactly that-muddy snowmen. The snowmen are made out of large marshmallows and the dry mud is the powdered hot chocolate mix. The only drawback is that, because each jar is individual, it takes up a bit of room in a gift basket, and it takes some time to create. A basket filled with three jars of this mix, complete with a ribbon and recipe card, makes a beautiful gift.

Ingredients You Will Need:
3 large marshmallows
Frosting
Mini chocolate chips
2 small peppermint candy canes (optional)
2 heaping tablespoons powdered hot cocoa
1 heaping tablespoon powdered sugar
½ tablespoon powdered non-fat dairy creamer

For this recipe, you'll need a small jelly jar with a lid and ring. Using the frosting, affix the marshmallows together to form a snowman. Attach the mini chips as the eyes, nose and mouth. Insert two candy canes on either side as arms, making sure you enter the middle marshmallow at a downward slant. For added support, also penetrate the bottom marshmallow with the peppermint stick. Finally, add a dab of frosting to the bottom of the snowman and affix it securely to the bottom of the jar. Set the open jar aside for a day or so, letting the frosting harden. This will ensure your snowman doesn't fall apart too early.

Once the frosting has hardened, and the snowman is secure on the bottom of the jar, it's time to make the dry mud. The dry mud is made by mixing the powdered ingredients together in a bowl and then spooning or dumping the mixture over the snowman. When all ingredients are inside the jar, secure the lid and set aside for gift giving.

Creating the Hot Chocolate
To make the hot chocolate, simply add warm milk. Put the lid back on the jar and then shake the jar gently until the snowman, chocolate chips and powdered ingredients mix to create a delightful glass of hot chocolate. Remove the lid. Add whipped topping, a swiggly straw, a long-handled spoon and, viola! No need for a mug because this mix can be enjoyed right out of the jar!
