But if you follow a vegan diet, the pre-made mixes found in the supermarket are off limits, since they have milk ingredients. Never fear, though, it is very easy to make a cup of vegan hot chocolate at home using a simple recipe. All that is needed is a non dairy milk, such as soy or rice milk, and vegan chocolate. Below are two recipes for vegan hot chocolate, one using chocolate chips and the other a mix of sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder.
Vegan Hot Chocolate Recipe 1
Ingredients
8 ounces non dairy milk (soy, rice, or nut milk)
1.5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch processed or regular)
1.5 tablespoons raw sugar
Directions
Heat non dairy milk in a small saucepan over medium heat. Mix together cocoa powder and raw sugar in a small bowl. Add cocoa and sugar mix to the non dairy milk, stir until dissolved.
Yield: 1 cup
Vegan Hot Chocolate Recipe 2
This recipe is richer than the previous recipe, as it uses chocolate chips instead of the cocoa powder. Make sure the chocolate chips are vegan by checking the ingredient list. Some varieties are labeled vegan, which makes things easier.
Ingredients
8 ounces soy, rice, or nut milk
2 tablespoons vegan chocolate chips
Directions
Heat soy milk over medium heat. Add chocolate chips and stir so that the chips melt and blend in with the milk. The hot chocolate is ready when the chips have completely blended in with the milk and the mixture is about 190 degrees Fahrenheit.
Yield: 1 cup
Serve either recipe with a dollop of vegan whipped cream, a sprinkling of vegan marshmallows, or simply enjoy it as it is.
Both recipes can be doubled or tripled easily to serve more than one person.
