The Difference Between Egg Rolls and Spring Rolls

By: Pamela Mooman

When eating Asian food, one can easily get on a rolleither spring rolls or egg rolls, to be exact. But what is the difference between egg rolls and spring rolls? Keep reading to find out.

Egg Rolls
Egg rolls are associated more often with Chinese food than with other types of Asian food.

  • The wrapper is fairly thick.
  • Fillings are usually pork with vegetables, including cabbage and carrots, or else completely vegetarian.
  • Egg roll wrappers are wrapped around the filling, with the ends tucked in and the sides overlapping the ends and each other.
  • Egg rolls are then sealed with brushed on egg, and deep fried.
  • Egg rolls are usually eaten with condiments, such as soy sauce and hot mustard.

Spring Rolls
Spring rolls are associated more with Thai food than with other types of Asian food.

  • The wrapper is paper-thin.
  • Fillings can vary, and include seafood such as shrimp, and also vegetables and herbs, including cabbage, carrots, and cilantro. Spring rolls also can be vegetarian, with tofu, and vegetables and herbs.
  • Spring rolls can be served either uncooked or fried. If uncooked, the ends are left open. If cooked, the ends are sealed.
  • Uncooked spring rolls, whether with seafood or meat or vegetarian, are delicious when served cold with Asian peanut sauce and spicy oil. Cooked spring rolls can be eaten with soy sauce, hot mustard, and spicy oil.

Uncooked vegetarian spring rolls are a light alternative to heavier cooked spring rolls and egg rolls.

However, both spring rolls and egg rolls can make a light meal on their own, as well as adding excitement and spice to an order that includes an Asian entre.

Whether cooked or uncooked, both egg rolls and spring rolls are a delicious treat, rich with vegetables, that can be enjoyed alone or with additional food.
