A Simple Turkey Chili Recipe

By: Kristen Oliveri

A turkey chili recipe is a popular variation on the traditional chili recipe. It makes the recipe a little bit healthier but still gives that rich flavor most of us crave from our chili dishes. It's perfect to whip up with some turkey leftovers after the holidays or a special occasion.

Recipe for Turkey Chili
Ingredients You Will Need:
¼ cup olive oil
1 cup green pepper, chopped
2 cups onion, chopped
3 to 4 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon dried hot red pepper flakes (optional)
2 cans stewed tomatoes
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 can beer
2 cans kidney beans, drained
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 lb cooked turkey meat
Salt, pepper to taste
Shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Chopped red onion (optional)
Dollop sour cream (optional)

In a large pot, add in the oil, and sauté the peppers and onion for about 5 minutes. Then add in the garlic, chili powder, cumin and red pepper flakes, and let cook for a few more minutes. Next, add in the tomatoes, tomato paste and beer, beans, oregano and cooked turkey. Bring the mixture to a simmer, and let it cook for about an hour uncovered.

Now add in the salt and pepper to taste. If you'd like, add in a pinch of sugar to offset the acidity of the tomatoes. Stir again thoroughly, and let simmer for another 30 minutes or so. You can garnish the turkey chili with a dollop of sour cream, a handful of chopped red onions and a sprinkle of shredded cheddar cheese. If you want to make it healthier, try low-fat cheddar cheese and non-fat sour cream.

Variations
Try adding some sliced scallions, chipotle chili adobo, avocados or cilantro sprigs to your turkey chili for some extra flavor.
