Traditional Greek salads are filled with wonderful olives, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms and feta cheese-tossed with that tangy, savory authentic Greek salad dressing everyone loves. Few people know how incredibly simple Greek salad dressing recipes are. If they did, everyone would make it at home instead of buying the bottled stuff.
Authentic Greek Salad Dressing
If you went to Greece and ordered a salad, you'd get a salad made from tomatoes, feta cheese, cucumbers and onions, dressed in a simple salad dressing made from olive oil, oregano, salt and pepper. If you want to recreate this authentic Greek salad dressing, follow these instructions.
Ingredients You Will Need:
½ cup olive oil
1 teaspoon oregano
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
Mix together and toss with salad. Serve immediately.
Easy Greek Salad Dressing
Americans added lettuce and a bunch of other vegetables into what is called a classic Greek salad when served in the United States. We also added lemons into the recipe.
Ingredients You Will Need:
2 lemons
½ cup extra virgin olive oil
Sea salt
Coarsely ground black pepper
Squeeze the juice from two lemons into a mixing dish. Add the olive oil and seasoning. Whisk or shake vigorously. Apply to salad immediately. This is a simple salad dressing that is impressively delicious.
Variations of Greek Salad Dressings
Many variations have been created off of this base salad dressing. Most commonly is the addition of red wine vinegar, sugar, basil, garlic powder and ground mustard. Perhaps the biggest change to the original recipe is found in the creamy Greek salad dressing, where buttermilk and feta cheese have been added to create a creamy, yet lumpy consistency.
Creamy Greek Salad Dressing
Ingredients You Will Need:
½ cup buttermilk
½ cup olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon fresh dill weed
¾ cup crumbled feta cheese
1 teaspoon oregano
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Combine all ingredients except feta cheese in a mixing bowl and whisk until incorporated. Fold in feta cheese. This makes a creamy, lumpy salad dressing that goes on much like a blue cheese dressing, only with flavors appropriate for dressing a Greek salad.
Herbal vinegars are a culinary delight. They can be used to cook or drizzled straight out of the bottle as a healthy alternative to salad dressing, and they make wonderful homespun gifts. |
Vinegar was a great accident. It's been around for as long as there has been fermented beverages, such as wine, beer, champagne and sake. The French named it, as "vin" means "wine" and "aigre" means "sour." |
