Simple Honey Mustard dressing

By: Chef Lisa

Honey mustard dressing is a classic favorite to serve on salads, for dipping chicken fingers, even to serve as a spread on sandwiches and wraps.  The name of the dressing says most of it, with two simple and common ingredients.  This dressing is a perfect example of combining different flavors to form one delicious recipe.  Using the sweetness of the honey and the tart, somewhat salty ,or sometimes spicy flavors of different mustards make a perfect harmony to the tongue.  Using honey mustard as a condiment for dipping goes well with pretzel snacks, certain chips, french fries, and many appetizers.  Adjusting the amount of honey or mustard to personal taste varies, also does the types of mustard used in honey mustard.  Any foodie will agree that the best thing to do is to try all different foods to expand knowledge and develop personalized opinions on different foods.  Experience is the best resource when it comes to food.

When it comes to choosing a brand of honey for this recipe, it is recommend to use a honey from a localized bee keeper close to home.  Not only is local bee honey great for building the body's immune system to fight allergies, but is also a healthy way to sweeten foods without using artificial sweeteners or other sugars.

Ingredients (makes one pint)

1/2  cup grain mustard

1/2  cup Dijon mustard

1 1/2 cups honey (recommended to use localized honey based on location)

Salt to taste (usually about 1 tablespoon)

1/4 cup orange juice

Directions:

  1. Combine mustard and honey in a medium bowl, whisk well with a wire whisk.
  2. Adjust consistency with orange juice, fresh squeezed or bottled.  If needing to be thickened, add honey and mustard by the  teaspoon until thickened.
  3. Season with salt, be sure to taste and adjust to personal preference.
