As more people become serious about their health, veggie burgers made with garbanzo beans are becoming even more popular. Veggie burgers can be made with a variety of vegetables and spices, but most include some type of rice or bread crumbs.
Garbanzo beans, commonly called chickpeas, are the world's most popular legume. Their firm texture makes them the perfect bean for many culinary dishes. Though garbanzo beans originated in the Middle East, they quickly became a popular staple in other parts of the world. In Germany, for instance, chickpeas were used as a coffee substitute during World War I, and the technique is still frequently used today. In America, we approach this bean from a different angle. It's not unusual to discover new recipes describing how to make garbanzo bean veggie burgers.
Because chickpeas are low in fat and filled with nutritious vitamins and healthy carbohydrates and proteins, they are one of the most highly recommended legumes on the market for consumption by diabetics.
Veggie Burgers Recipes
The key to making veggie burger recipes is making sure the texture resembles bread dough. This enables the veggie burger to hold its shape. Coating the finished burger with chives, seeds or breadcrumbs will also help the burger to remain in shape.
Cold veggie burgers will hold their shape better than burgers that are at room temperature. If making the burgers ahead of time, make sure they're stored in an airtight container.
Garbanzo Veggie Burgers Recipe
Ingredients You Will Need:
2 teaspoons sunflower oil
½ medium red onion, minced
1 clove garlic, minced
2 cans garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed
½ cup cooked rice
?" cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped
Banana peppers, roasted
Cook the onion in the sunflower oil until it becomes transparent. Add the garlic and cook for another minute or two. Remove from heat. When the onion oil has cooled, pour it into a food processor along with the garbanzo beans, rice and tomatoes. Chop or pulse until the beans are nearly mashed, but some structure still remains.
Form into patties and refrigerate for at least one hour. Grill or fry.
Serve on a hamburger bun with spinach leaves. Garnish with roasted onion rings and banana peppers. Add a dill pickle and a little salt and pepper.
A simple garden burger recipe might be something as easy as just a slice of tomato, a slice of eggplant and a few spices tossed in for flavor. Or you can take a garden burger recipe a bit further and mix a few veggies together to form a patty that can be grilled. It all boils down to how adventurous you want to get.
For some time I have been experimenting with different ways of cooking inexpensive but healthy veggie burgers. There are six main ingredients in these veggie burgers, rice, beans, onions, carrots, and some times bread and cheese.
